Make a modern crochet bandana with this free floral motif pattern. Easy step-by-step instructions for a fresh, minimal handmade accessory.

A crochet bandana is one of those small accessories that can completely change the feel of an outfit. Worn as a headscarf, tied around the neck, or clipped onto a bag, it adds a handmade touch without feeling fussy or overdone. This modern floral motif design keeps things clean and minimal, so it pairs easily with everyday looks while still showing off real handmade texture.

What You’ll Need

  • A 3mm crochet hook
  • Lightweight cotton yarn
  • Scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge: one complete floral motif measures roughly 2 inches across.

Motif count for a medium headband: 8 full motifs plus 2 half motifs.

Step 1: Make the Full Motif

Round 1 — Build the base circle

Start with a magic ring and chain 4 (this stands in for your first double crochet plus a chain-1 space). Into the ring, work a double crochet followed by a chain-2 space, and repeat this sequence seven more times, giving you 8 double crochets and 8 chain-2 spaces total. Pull the tail to close the ring, then slip stitch into the third chain of your starting chain-4 to join the round.

Stitch count: 8 dc, 8 chain-2 spaces.

Round 2 — Shape the petals

Slip stitch into the first chain-2 space and chain 5 to set up your first petal. To build the cluster stitch in that same space: yarn over, insert your hook into the space, pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through two loops — repeat this four times so you end up with five loops sitting on your hook. Yarn over one final time and pull through all five loops together, then chain 1 to lock the cluster in place.

Chain 4 and move to the next chain-2 space, repeating the same cluster stitch there. Continue around until every space has a petal, then slip stitch into the top of your very first cluster to close the round.

Stitch count: 8 petal clusters with 8 connecting chain-4 spaces.

Step 2: Join Your Motifs As You Go

Joining a single edge

When you start a new motif and reach the fourth petal, swap the usual chain-4 for this: chain 2, slip stitch into the matching chain-4 space on the neighboring motif, then chain 2 again. Finish the cluster in your current motif’s space as normal and keep going.

Joining at a corner (double edge)

Where three motifs come together, insert your hook through the shared chain-4 space of both neighboring motifs at once, pull up a loop, and slip stitch. Then complete the cluster stitch in your current space before continuing.

Step 3: Make the Half Motifs for the Edges

Half motifs give the bandana its tapered, triangular ends.

Round 1

Magic ring, chain 4, then work a double crochet plus chain-2 space six times (instead of eight) into the ring. Close by pulling the tail tight and slip stitching into your starting chain to join.

Stitch count: 6 dc, 6 chain-2 spaces.

Round 2

Work petals the same way as the full motif, just across six spaces instead of eight. After your last petal, chain 2 and slip stitch into the corner of the neighboring motif to attach it, then fasten off and weave in your ends.

Step 4: Lay Out and Assemble

Arrange your motifs like this for a triangular bandana shape (scale the numbers up or down for a different size):

Row Full Motifs Half Motifs Join Type
Top 3 0 Single edge
Middle 2 0 Double edge
Bottom 1 2 (one each side) Double edge

Attach the half motifs along the bottom row edges, matching them up with the full motifs beside them using the double-edge join.

Step 5: Add the Border and Ties

Join your yarn at any point along the outer edge of the assembled piece. Work 2–3 double crochets into each chain-4 space as you go around the entire perimeter for a clean, finished edge.

At each top corner, chain 60 to form the ties, then slip stitch back along the chain to give the ties a bit more body and thickness.

Once assembled, give the bandana a light steam block or gentle iron so the motifs sit flat and the stitch detail really stands out.

Tips for a Smoother Make

  • Join as you go. It’s faster than sewing motifs together afterward and gives you neater seams.
  • Play with color. Alternating shades between motifs can turn this into a much bolder, statement piece.
  • Watch your edging count. Adjust how many double crochets you work per space if your border starts to ruffle or pull tight.

This floral motif bandana is a great small-scale project if you’re between bigger makes — and once you’ve got the motif join-as-you-go technique down, it carries over nicely into other granny-style projects like our sunburst granny square blanket or the chunky daisy blanket pattern. And if you’re building out a matching set, our crochet cable scarf pattern makes a cozy companion piece.
