Measuring approximately 8 cm across, this pattern uses fine crochet cotton to create a sturdy, detailed piece. Plus, crafting something a little weird is a great way to experience the benefits of crochet for everyone—there is nothing like stitching tiny red veins to melt away the stress of the day!

Read on to grab the free pattern, learn how to add realistic embroidered veins, and discover creative ways to use your new crochet eyeball!

Why You’ll Love This Crochet Eyeball Pattern

This pattern is worked flat in the round, making it an excellent project for confident beginners and intermediate crocheters alike. By using size 7 to 10 crochet cotton and a 2.5mm hook, you get tight, crisp stitches that really make the iris and veins pop.

Once finished, these eyeballs are incredibly versatile. You can use them as:

Materials and Supplies

To bring your crochet eyeball to life, gather the following supplies:

  • Crochet Cotton Ball (Size 7 to 10): You will need 3 colors—Iris color, Outer eye (white/sclera) color, and Edging color.
    • Note: Crochet thread is labelled with a number, like a 3 or a 10. This refers to the thickness of the thread—the smaller the number, the thicker the thread.
  • Crochet Hook: Size 2.5mm
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery Needle: Rounded point
  • Embroidery Thread or Crochet Cotton: In red (or your preferred vein color)
  • Spray Starch: For stiffening your finished eyeball (optional, but recommended for coasters)

Abbreviations Used (US Version)

This pattern uses standard US crochet terminology:

  • ch – Chain
  • ch st – Chain stitch
  • ch sp – Chain space
  • sc – Single crochet
  • dc – Double crochet
  • tr – Treble or Triple crochet
  • sl st – Slip stitch

Finishing Off and Adding the Creepy Veins

The veins are what truly bring this crochet eyeball to life! Here is how to add them:

  1. Prep your thread: For this tutorial, I split my embroidery thread in two for thinner veins, and cut my thread into lengths of 40 cm. The amount of thread you use will depend on how many veins you want.
  2. Stitching: Using either embroidery thread or crochet cotton, thread your embroidery needle. Start in the red edging, coming from the back and threading through to the front.
  3. Randomize: Pick up crochet stitches in each row randomly. There is no strict order—create the veins as you go along! You can create thin, subtle veins as shown in this pattern, or thicker veins for a more bloodshot look.
  4. Clean up: Weave in all ends and cut off any excess thread.

Pro-Tip for Coasters: Spray starch onto your finished eyeball and block it to make it more stiff. This ensures your coaster lies flat and keeps its perfect circular shape!
