Pattern Instructions
The Center
Round 1 – The Center: magic loop, ch1 as a standing st, 12sc into the loop, pull the tail tightly, sl st to the first sc.
Round 2 – Enlarge the Center: ch3 (count as 1dc), another 1dc in the same st. Make dc inc in each of the remaining sts, sl st to the top of the first ch3.
Wings and Ears
One Wing and Two Ears: ch4, work back along this chain: slst in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1sc in the 3rd ch; Next, ch5, working back along this chain: slst in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc inc in the 3rd ch, 1hdc+1dc in the 4th ch, (1dc, ch-3 pic, 1dc, 1hdc) in the 5th ch. Return to the first ch4, work 1sc in the 3rd ch where you made the first sc, and 1hdc in the 4th unworked ch. This completes one wing.
Move to the stitches of the previous round (the main body of your work): sk1, 2 slst. Two ears: ch4, slst in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1sc in the 3rd ch, 1hdc in the 4th ch. On main piece: sk2, work slst in each of the next 4 sts. Work ch4: slst in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1sc in the 3rd ch, 1hdc in the 4th ch. On main piece: sk2, slst in the next st, fasten off.
Another Wing: Turn over. Join yarn in the 3rd stitch below the ear, counting from the stitch directly under the ear’s base. Then repeat the steps that you made for the first wing
The Border
Round 3 – First Border: Third loop only. Join yarn in the first st to the right of the four center-top stitches on the bat’s head. ch3 as a standing st (count as 1dc), another 1dc in the same st to form a dc inc, 4hdc, dc inc, ch3; [dc inc, 4hdc, dc inc, ch3] repeat 3 times, sl st to the top of the first ch3.
Round 4 – 5: Work 1dc in each st around, 2dc+ch3+2dc in each corner sp as you go. At the beginning of each round, ch3 as a standing st, this counts as 1dc, and sl st to the top of the initial ch3 as the end. Fasten off.
Round 6: Add new yarn in any corner, ch3 as a standing st (count as 1dc), make 1dc in each st around, 5dc in each corner sp as you go. sl st to the top of the first ch3, fasten off to finish.
Final Touch
Final Touch: Secure the wings and ears. For each eye, ch4 and sl st to the first ch to form a small loop. This loop will serve as the eye base.
