Materials Needed

To get started, you will need the following supplies:

  • Yarn:
    • 1 skein of RED HEART® Super Saver® yarn (Color: 319 Cherry Red)
  • Crochet Hook:
    • Susan Bates® crochet hook (Size: 5.0 mm [US H-8])
  • Notions:
    • Yarn needle
    • Stitch markers
    • Stiff cardboard (12″ or 30.5 cm long for making a tassel)
  • Additional Items: None beyond the above materials

Instructions

TOTE Sides (Make 2)

Start by chaining 2.

Row-by-row Instructions:

  1. Row 1 (Wrong Side): 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook; turn — 3 sc
  2. Row 2 (Right Side): Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc; turn — 5 sc
  3. Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each across; turn — 5 sc
  4. Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc across to last 2 sc, 2 sc in last sc; turn — 7 sc
  5. Row 5: Repeat Row 3 — 7 sc
  6. Rows 6-7: Repeat Row 4 — 11 sc
  7. Rows 8-31: Repeat Rows 5-7 — 43 sc
  8. Rows 32-33: Repeat Row 3 — 43 sc
  9. Row 34: Repeat Row 4 — 45 sc
  10. Rows 35-36: Repeat Row 3 — 45 sc
  11. Row 37: Repeat Row 4 — 47 sc
  12. Rows 38-45: Repeat Row 3 — 47 sc

Top Right Curve

  1. Row 46: Ch 1, sc in first 23 sc; turn — 23 sc
  2. Row 47: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc across to last 2 sc, sc2tog; turn — 21 sc
  3. Row 48: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn — 21 sc
  4. Row 49: Repeat Row 47 — 19 sc
  5. Row 50: Repeat Row 48 — 19 sc
  6. Rows 51-55: Repeat Row 47 — 9 sc
  7. Fasten off.

Top Left Curve

  1. Row 46: Go back to Row 45; skip next sc and join in next; sc across remaining sc of Row 45; turn — 23 sc
  2. Rows 47-55: Repeat Rows 47-55 of Top Right Curve; at end of last row, do not fasten off, turn.

Edging

  1. Round 1 (Right Side): Ch 1; working 1 sc in each sc or side of each row, sc in first 64 sts, 3 sc in back of ch at bottom point, place marker in middle sc of 3-sc group just made, sc in remaining 85 sts — 152 sc
  2. Round 2: Slip st in front loop of each sc around, moving marker to the st at center of bottom point — 152 sts
  3. Fasten off.

Gusset

Count 46 sts before and after the marked st and place markers in both sts.

Gusset Rounds:

  1. Round 1 (Right Side): Join with sc in marked st on left edge of Side; sc in each st around up to marked st on right edge of Side; turn — 93 sc
  2. Rounds 2-3: Ch 1, sc in each sc on previous round; turn. At end of last round, fasten off.

Handle (Make 2)

  1. Ch 55.
  2. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; turn — 54 sc
  3. Row 2: Slip st in front loop of each sc across; turn — 54 sts
  4. Row 3: Ch 1, sc in remaining back loops of each sc on Row 1; turn — 54 sc
  5. Row 4: Slip st in front loop of each sc across — 54 sts
  6. Fasten off.

Tassel

  1. Wrap yarn around cardboard 20 times, then cut one end.
  2. Tie a long piece of yarn around the center of the strands and pull strands down.
  3. Wrap a long piece of yarn about ¾” down from the top tightly, going downward until about 1″ long; knot ends together and pull to the inside.
  4. Trim lower ends evenly.
  5. Make a chain 15 chs long and fasten off.

Finishing Touches

With Right Sides together, align and sew the front and back Sides of the Heart together by sewing through both loops of the sts on the last rounds of Gussets. Turn Right Side out.

Sew the Handles to the Tote according to the desired placement (refer to photo). Wrap the ch-15 length around one Handle and sew it to the top of the Tassel.
